During a trip to London this week I made a fantastic discovery at the city’s famous food bazaar, Borough Market: Mulled Wine. Unsurprisingly the weather was nippy, however you couldn’t help but be entranced by smells drifting from all four corners of the market from the different vendors and their huge barrels of yumminess. The warm, spicy aroma made me smile with excitement.
Even though I am clearly late in catching onto this centuries old tradition, I was easily converted into a Mulled Wine Believer. It instantly makes you feel festive and cosy. Instead of drinking plain old wine this holiday season, spice up your life with this recipe. You, your friends and your family will get into the holiday spirit as soon as the spiced fragrances seep into your nostrils and warm your souls. Mulled Wine Recipe
- 1 (750-ml) bottle red wine, such as Merlot
- 3/4 cup sugar
- 1/4 cup Mulled Spices (2 cinnamon sticks, 6 cloves, 1/2 nutmeg grated, 1 tbsp dried ginger, 1tbsp marjoram, 1 tbsp cardamom & 1 vanilla bean)
- 1 orange, peeled and sliced.
Method
Combine the red wine, sugar, and orange slices in a large saucepan. Wrap spices in cheese cloth (and tie) or put them in a tea infuser before submerging spices into wine. Bring mixture to a boil, then simmer over low heat for 10 minutes uncovered, followed by another 10 minutes covered. Roll orange peel and slice for garnish. Pour into mugs and serve.
